Combat Patrol Games

Tonight I was able to play two 500 point Combat Patrol games, one against Ryan and the other against JJ.  The first game I was played Eldar against Ryan’s Space Marines.

Eldar:
2 squads of 3 Jetbikes with 1 Shuriken Cannon, 1 Warlock on Jetbike with Embolden
2 squads of 2 War Walkers with Scatter Lasers

Space Marines:
3 Land Speeders with Multi-melta and Flamers
2 Heavy Bolter Razorbacks with 5 Marines

The first turn I was able to wreck one Razorback and immobilize a Speeder with Scatter Laser fire, and it basically went downhill for Ryan from there.  He was able to take out one squad of Walkers and a squad of Jetbikes, but the other squads caused problems for Ryan all game.  At the end of the game all of the speeders and Razorbacks were wrecked and the remaining squad of bikes was tied up in combat with the Marines.

The second game was against JJ’s Space Wolves and I was playing Tau.

Tau:
4 Pathfinders
Devilfish with Disruption Pods

6 Stealth Suits

Space Wolves:
3 Thunderwolves
10 Grey Hunters in Rhino
6 Long Fangs with 5 Missile Launchers

This game did not go well for the Tau.  I was able to take out the Thunderwolves with the Crisis Suits after feeding them some Gun Drones and the Fire Warriors.  The Stealth Suits failed to do anything more than shake the Rhino and then died to Grey Hunters.  And the Crisis Suits died to missile fire.

Overall it was a fun night.  I learned quite a bit about how to work with a very limited point level.

1000pt Tau vs. Blood Angels

I played a short game against JJ’s Blood Angels tonight.  Sadly I didn’t get any pictures.

We played Sieze Ground with 5 objectives and Pitched Battle.  JJ won the roll and passed me the first turn.  I placed my Kroot in some trees in the middle of my side with my suits and Piranha behind them.  The Hammerhead was on a hill to my right, while the Broadside was on the left.  My Devilfish with the Fire Warriors were in reserve.  JJ deployed the Stormraven behind a hill with the Dreadnaught and Death Company inside.  The Assault Squad and Priest were in reserve.

First turn I managed to immobilize the Stormraven, but that was it.  JJ moved the Death Company and Dread up towards my center.

On the second turn, I was able to wreck the Dreadnaught with the Piranha and kill off two of the Death Company.  They got close enough and took out my Kroot in assault.  The Stormraven killed the Piranha.

Turn three saw my Devilfish come onto the table in my right corner.  I fired more at the Death Company whittling them down to just 2 plus the Sanguinor, but that didn’t matter.

For the rest of the game, I couldn’t keep away from him and he managed to take out the Crisis Suits and my Devilfish before my Fire Warriors finally killed him.  My Broadside shot terribly, either missing completely, or hitting and then failing to wound him.  The game ended with JJ’s Assault Squad holding one objective, while my Fire Warriors were stranded too far away from their objective.

Tau Hammerhead Redo

I wasn’t really enthused about the way my Hammerhead was turning out.  It seemed just a little too plain, and I didn’t really know how to spice it up, so I took a look through the codex for some inspiration.  In there I found a sample camouflage pattern that I thought would go well.  The pattern in the book was the same red and gray scheme that I had been working with.  Well, started painting it last night and I think it is coming along quite nicely.  The lines could be a little cleaner, and I’m thinking of getting an airbrush to try and make things go a little easier.  Anyway, here’s the picture of the progress so far, sorry about the quality of the picture, I am in the Twin Cities for work and the only camera I have is my phone.

WIP: Tau Hammerhead

I started work on my first Tau Hammerhead tank tonight.  The army will be primarily red with light gray on parts.  I like how the colors are coming out, but it just seems kind of plain right now.  There are plenty of details that still need to be picked out, but on the whole, there just seems to be something lacking.  I’ve done the camouflage stippling on my Eldar, and I don’t really want to do the same thing on the Tau.  I want something to really make the tanks look distinct, but I’m not sure what.

Black Templars vs. Tau and Deathwing

Another guy has joined our meager 40k group, so now we have a total of 4 players in the area.  One was not available this last Wednesday, so the rest of us decided to play a two vs. one game.  It was decided that it would be Ryan’s Death Wing and my Tau versus JJ’s Black Templar.  Ryan and I each had 1000 point armies, while JJ put together a single 2000 point army.

The lists were:

Tau:

Commander with Plasma Rifle, Missile Pod and Multi-tracker

We rolled for mission and deployment and ended up with Annihilation and Dawn of War.  Ryan and I won the roll and decided to go second.  JJ deployed one of his Land Raiders with the Templar and Emperor’s Champion right in the middle of the board.  Ryan placed his Land Raider with terminators and Belial about 20” away.  His other terminator squad would deepstrike.

On the first turn, JJ’s stuff rolled onto the board.  The other Land Raider coming in to our right, while the Vindicator, Rhino (full of Templars) and Predator came on to the left of center.  The Land Speeder would deepstrike.  There wasn’t anything in range, so no shooting.  On our turn, my Tau all arrived on the left side.  The Broadsides and Pathfinders took up position on a small hill surrounded by Kroot.  The Fire Warriors took the Devilfish, and the Piranha zoomed forward to park itself in front of JJ’s Land Raider.  Ryan’s Land Raider backed up a little.  The deepstriking terminators came in due to Deathwing Assault and almost fell off the table.  They did survive and even managed to see the Predator well enough to put some Autocannon shots into it and wreck it.

JJ’s Landspeeder came in on turn two, and tried to help take out the Piranha, but even with the Land Raider’s help, the Piranha only suffered shaken and weapon destroyed rolls.  All of JJ’s remaining tanks moved up, but only the Vindicator had a shot, but it missed horribly.  My Pathfinders lit up the Rhino allowing the Devilfish and a squad of Crisis Suits to wreck it.  The other squad of Suits managed to take out four of the Marines that were now out.  The Broadsides immobilized the Vinicator.  The Piranha dropped off its Drones, but they were ineffective against the Land Speeder, so Ryan’s Land Raider dealt with that.

JJ’s Land Raiders and Dreadnought were the only mobile things remaining.  The Raider full of Terminators moved in closer, while the other Raider danced around in back.  The Dreadnought moved up and managed to immobilize Ryan’s Raider.  The Templar Marines shot and assaulted Ryan’s Terminators and killed two, but lost all but on in return.

Ryan and I managed to destroy the Terminator Land Raider and in the closing turns Ryan’s and JJ’s Terminators dueled it out with only one of JJ’s Terminators remaining in the end.  This Terminator would end up dieing from shots from my Gun Drones (a definite highlight).  The Vindicator continued to shell the Broadsides, but I was able to stay in cover and minimize the destruction until my Suits were able to get behind it and wreck it.

In the end, the game finished on turn 6 with the Templar claiming three kill points and the combined Tau and Deathwing claiming 7.

It was a good, fun game overall.  JJ definitely suffered from a bit of rust in terms of tactics and gameplay.  We also had a bit of an advantage with the combination of armies.  In the end though, everyone had a good time, and it was definitely nice to have another player to keep things different.

Three Fire Warriors

I’ve painted three Fire Warriors so far just testing various styles and techniques.  I haven’t completed the detailing and bases on them.

They are all primed with Krylon Ruddy Brown primer.  The left one was painted with a single coat of Mechrite Red, then highlighted with Astronomican Grey, and then washed with 2 coats of Baal Red.  The center one was a painted with 2 coats of Scar Red, then highlighted with Bleached Bone, and washed with 2 coats of Baal Red.  The right one was painted with Scar Red, washed with Baal Red and then highlighted with Scar Red.

The highlighting on the far right is a lot more subtle, but it takes a bit longer.  The one on the left was the quickest, but I’m not a fan of the way the grey looks after the wash.  I’m going to try a few more techniques, but so far I think painting with Mechrite Red and highlighting with Bleached Bone would be the best looking one for the speed.

Short 1000 point Tau vs. Dark Angels Report

I played my first game with my new Tau army tonight against my friend Ryan’s new Dark Angel army.  We each brought 1000 points and duked it out in an Annihilation game with Pitched Battle deployment.

I won the roll and decided to go first.  I placed all of my Crisis Suits in the middle of my deployment zone with the Piranha behind them.  The Fire Warriors and Broadsides deployed behind a tall hill to my left.  Ryan deployed the Land Raider with assault Terminators and Dreadnought directly across the table from me and the other squad of Terminators would Deep Strike.  My Kroot then infiltrated with the large squad spread out in front of my Crisis Suits, and the other squad surrounding my Broadsides.

On the first turn, my Piranha sped forward and parked in front of the Land Raider.  The large Kroot squad moved forward into some trees, and the Crisis Suits moved up and opened fire on the Dreadnought managing to immobilize it.  The Broadsides managed to make it halfway up the hill and fired on the Land Raider, but failed to connect.  On Ryan’s turn, the deepstriking squad of terminators landed behind my lines, but failed to damage anything with shooting.  The Land Raider and Dreadnought fired on the Piranha, managing to damage the weapons system.

On turn two, the Piranha retreated back to my lines.  The Fireknife squads reversed and fired on the shooty terminator squad, killing two.  The Deathrains only managed to shake the Dreadnought and the Broadsides stunned the Land Raider.  Due to the Power of the Machine Spirit, the Raider was still able to zoom forward and the assault terminators smashed into my Kroot.  The hounds proved their worth and managed to do 4 wounds and the terminators rolled three 1’s and thus perishing.  The luck did not persist for the Kroot, though, and 10 of them died to the Terminators and they promptly turned tail and ran.

On the next turn, my Crisis Suits finished off the shooty terminators and with the help of the Broadsides, reduced the other squad to just Belial.  The rest of the game was just clean-up.  Belial perished on turn 4, while the Raider and the Dreadnought fell on turn 5.

At the end of the game, the Dark Angels had been completely wiped out with only the loss of a single squad of Kroot for the Tau.
