Space Wolves List

This is the list that will include the Space Wolves that I’ve been showing lately.  It’s still a work in progress, and I’m not 100% satisfied, but I think it is close.

2199 points total

The list revolves around the heroes.  Logan and Njal join the 5 Terminators and march up the board along with the Lone Wolves.  The Thunderwolf Lords bound forward to eat anything that gets close.  The Drop Pod is to take out a Land Raider or other major threat early on.  While the other Wolf Guard squads and the Long Fangs sit back and shoot missiles all day.

It has some weaknesses, but it should be a fun list to play.

WIP: Wolf Lords on Thunderwolves

Here are my new Wolf Lords for my Space Wolf army.

The first is riding a Vampire Dire wolf from the Dungeons and Dragons minis line, and wielding a Frost Blade.

The second, armed with a Thunderhammer and a Storm Shield, is riding a Fenris Wolf from the Heroclix line.

Putting these to together was a lot of fun, and I’m looking forward to painting them.  One thing I realized while doing this is that I have a lot to learn about using green stuff.  I tried making a saddle, but my skills are pretty limited.

WIP: Long Fang

Here are the beginnings of a Long Fang Squad Leader.

WIP: Space Wolves Logan Grimnar

I’ve been toying with the idea of a Space Wolves army for a while now.  Then as a Christmas gift, a friend of mine gave me the Marines from an Assault on Black Reach set.  With a 2200 point tournament coming up at the end of February, I figured this would be a good time to give it a whirl.  I am doing the army in a light grey color instead of the traditional greyish-blue color.  Beyond that, though, I plan on sticking with standard markings while still giving each member of the army a uniqueness fitting to the space wolves.

Of course, the first model to get the paint had to be the Great Wolf Logan Grimnar himself.

I need to attach the cloak, finish the base, and add some detailing to the shoulder armor.

Drones

A gun drone and two shield drones from my Tau army.

Tau Pathfinders

Here are my Tau Pathfinders.  They are simply Fire Warriors with the Pulse Carbine instead of the Pulse Rifle.  Then I painted them with a tiger stripe style camo to represent their ability to blend in and provide the long range spotting support.  They have not been highlighted, and some details still need to be picked out, but they are ready to hit the tabletop.

I also did something a little different that what I am accustomed to by painting up a couple without helmets.  I usually stick to helmeted guys, since I just think it makes more sense and looks better, but for these I decided to paint up two “squad leaders” without helmets.  I achieved the grey/blue skin by starting with a base of Astronomican Grey and covering it with a light wash of Asurmen Blue.

Finished Kroot Hounds

Here are the finished Hounds.

Kroot Hound

A nearly complete Kroot Hound from my Tau army.  It’s made from a Chaos Hound.  I was originally planning on making the entire mane red, but that was a bit too much.  I ended up doing the light brown with the crest of red that will match the Kroot themselves.  This hound still needs to be highlighted, and of course the basing.

Orks:
Warboss & 10 ‘ard boyz in a truck
10 Nobs in a truck
2 sets of 20 boyz in battlewagons with deffrollas
2 squads of 6 Lootas
20 shoota boyz on foot
Looted Wagon
3 Deffkoptas
3 Warbuggies (1 rockit, 2 big shootas)

The table was setup randomly, and the mission was determined to be Seize ground with three objectives.  Two objectives were placed on my right, with one on its own to the left.  Deployment was Pitched Battle.  Nick won the roll and elected to go first.  He deployed all along his side, making good use of the hills on his side for cover and firing lanes.  In response I placed my stuff in my right corner.  The Kroot infiltrated to create a larger wall and prevent the Koptas from scouting too close.

Once we deployed, I managed to steal the initiative.

Turn 1:

I moved up with my Piranhas, Kroot and Crisis Suits.  My Fire Warriors jump aboard the Devilfish, and the Broadsides opened fire on the sides of the Battlewagons, wrecking both.  The Suits and Kroot fired on the Kopta’s but were ineffective due to cover saves.  The Hammerheads fired on the Lootas, but only killed a few.  On Nick’s turn he moved the trucks, boyz and nobz forward.  The Koptas fired on the front line of kroot and ended up forcing them to run.  The Loota’s shot Piranhas and knocked out one, while the other Piranha squad lost one to assault.

Turn 2:

The Kroot continued to fall back for now.  The Piranha’s moved and took out the remaining two trucks.  My Crisis Suits and Hammerheads tried to take out the ‘Ard Boys and Warboss from the truck on the right, but only managed to kill half the boyz.  Nick proceeded to then finish off the Piranhas, and killed the gun drones in assault.  He was also able to skirt the edge of my kroot wall with his warboss and proceeded to engage my Broadsides in assault, killing one and a shield drone.

Turn 3:

On turn 3, I nearly wiped out the nearest squad of boyz, and the boyz on the far left objective.  My running Kroot regrouped and then ran to get back into position, while the other squad of kroot joined the assault with the broadsides to try and help, but only managed to prolong the fight.  The looted wagon took out my left Hammerhead and a couple suits fell to loota fire.  The assault continued on with minor losses on both sides.

Turns 4-7:

The rest of the game was fairly uneventful.  The assault eventually ended with just the warboss remaining, who promptly fell to Crisis Suit fire.  The lone Nob holding the objective on the left fell to a precision Railgun shot.  I dropped the Fire Warriors off on the nearest objective and moved the Devilfish into position to contest the other objective on the right.  At the end of turn 5 it would have been a draw, on turn 6 it would have gone to the Tau, but the game went to 7.  Nick was able to get the Nobs over to the left objective and then managed to kill enough Fire Warriors with his lootas to force a leadership test.  They  promptly failed and ran off the board.

The game was a lot of fun.  It really started off well for the Tau, but slowly turned due to mistakes and an inability to finish off all them orks.  The biggest mistakes in my opinion, was not running my kroot to seal up the gap that the Warboss exploited, and then assaulting into that combat.  If I had stayed out, I still would have lost the Broadsides, but the kroot would have been able to keep shooting other groups.  Other than that, it was a great game, and I really learned a lot about how my army plays, and how they’re fare against probably their worst matchup.

Tau Piranhas WIP

The colors on the Piranhas have been blocked out and the base coat has been applied.  They need the detailing picked out and some highlighting and shading.  I’m really pleased with the overall colors and I plan on using a similar scheme now on the larger tanks.
